ANSWERS: General Product and Pre-sales FAQs

What is the SpamWall Spam Firewall? [Top]

The SpamWall Spam Firewall is a hosted email gateway appliance incorporating a comprehensive Spam and Virus filtering solution that ensures all email arriving at your mail server and network is Spam and Virus free.

The SpamWall system provides an integrated Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus solution offering complete email protection at the "network perimeter" level, before unwanted or potentially dangerous and costly email reaches your network or mail server. The SpamWall is positioned "in front" of your existing email server and is able to immediately start working to block and filter up to 98% or more of all Spam/UCE (“unsolicited commercial email”) and Virus infected emails using it's default "out of the box" settings alone.

For more information on how the SpamWall Spam Firewall works see How the SpamWall Works or view the SpamWall Online Operations Manual.

How can I obtain a free demonstration SpamWall system? [Top]

Simply place your order online to obtain a free 30-Day Trial of an SpamWall Spam Firewall. No credit card or other payment details are initially required. Your SpamWall system is usually set up and ready for service within 1-6 hours of your placing your online order.

Can I evaluate my SpamWall being charged for the service? What is the free trial period? [Top]

You can use and evaluate your SpamWall system for up to 30 days. After that, you will be contacted to see if you wish to continue with the service. If you decide not to continue with the service for any reason there will be no charges due or payable. The first 30 days is always free, after that if you are not satisfied with your new service for any reason there is no obligation to continue and no payment is due or expected.

After I sign up, how soon will my SpamWall system be online and ready for use? [Top]

Depending on the type of Spamwall system ordered you can expect to be in receipt of your login and configuration details within 1-6 hours. Other factors that can influence the setup time are completeness of your order and in particular whether valid and verifiable contact details (email address, domain name etc) have been provided.

Once your SpamWall is online and ready for service you will receive a setup letter from our technical support department that will include all of the relevant login and configuration details for the system. Once you have received the configuration and login details to your SpamWall system you will need to log in and set up the system for the domain(s) you will be providing email scanning and filtering for.

After this has been done you will need to modify the MX records of your domain(s) to route email to your SpamWall system for processing. More information on modifying MX records can be found in the Setting up MX Records section of the SpamWall Operations Manual.

Are there any setup fees involved? [Top]

There are no setup fees involved for any of our services unless you need to have non-standard software installed or have special pre-setup, installation or configuration requirements.

We run an ISP or Web Hosting Service. How will using the SpamWall benefit us and our clients? [Top]

The SpamWall Spam Firewall system is ideal for ISPs, Web Hosting Providers and Hosting Resellers who are looking for an "off the shelf" solution and wanting to minimize inhouse development and maintenance as much as possible while reducing the load on their mail servers and networks, as well as realizing savings on bandwidth, administrative and support costs.

The SpamWall system is a complete "out of the box" solution that is very easy to implement. There is no expensive hardware to purchase, no server to build, no software to install and configure, no compatibility issues, no on-going maintenance issues, and no steep "learning curve" involved. You can be up and running within a few hours and seeing an immediate reduction of up to a 98% or more of Spam, Viruses and other unwanted email being delivered to your email server and email account users.

Unlike other anti-spam solutions, the SpamWall Spam Firewall reduces the load placed on your existing email server and network by off-loading the task of both Spam and Virus processing and filtering, effectively reducing the volume of Spam, Viruses and other unwanted email reaching your email server by up to 98%.

In addition to the benefits gained from outsourcing and off-loading the task of Spam and Virus Filtering the SpamWall can also be an additional and profitable value added service that you can offer your existing and potential clients.

Reseller discounts are available for ISPs, Web Hosting Resellers, VARs, MSPs and other IT professionals. Custom "OEM" or "white label" versions of the SpamWall system are also available that you can completely "re-brand" with your own logo, product or brand names so that you can market and sell the service as your own. For more information on this please complete and submit our Reseller / Partner Enquiry Form.

How does the SpamWall Spam Firewall System work? [Top]

The SpamWall provides an integrated Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus solution that is positioned "in front" of your existing email server acting as secure email "gateway" which is able to immediately start working to block and filter up to 98% or more of all Spam and Virus laden emails using it's default "out of the box" settings alone.

The SpamWall system offers complete email protection at the "network perimeter" level, before unwanted or potentially dangerous and costly email reaches your network or mail server. The design of the SpamWall Spam Firewall system leverages open source Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus solutions in conjunction with a number of additional filtering and defense layers to detect and filter out Spam and other unwanted email messages along with Viruses and other potentially dangerous attachments.

Filtering and defense layers and methods employed include Connection Control and Validation, IP/Domain RBL Blocking, Virus scanning with archive decompression, Spam Fingerprint Checking, and a comprehensive rule-based Spam Scoring System incorporating Content Analysis (Heuristics) and Bayesian Analysis. This multi-layer Spam and Virus Filtering Technology results in a highly accurate Spam and Virus detection rate without filtering legitimate email.

For more information on how the SpamWall Spam Firewall works see How the SpamWall Works or view the SpamWall Operations Manual.

How accurate is the SpamWall system? [Top]

While other systems have spam detection rates of 40 to 70 percent, the SpamWall is able to provide high Spam and Virus detection rates of up to 98% or more with very low false positive rates using only the default settings.

These detection rates can be further improved by the automatic self-tuning and learning mechanisms built into the SpamWall system as well as by adjustments made to the Spam Scanning and Filtering engine.

What about “false positives”, will we loose any mail? [Top]

The SpamWall is able to provide high Spam/Virus detection rates of up to 98% or more and has one of the lowest false positive rates in the industry. In it's default configuration the SpamWall system is designed to minimize false positives (legitimate email messages being identified and blocked as Spam).

With no additional configuration or tuning the false positive rate is typically at less than 0.1%, or less than one in every 10,000 email messages processed by the system. However, should you experience any legitimate email being identified as Spam no email will be lost as any email which is detected as Spam and being over the "action level" set in the SpamFilter Config settings will be directed to the Spam Quarantine, which you will have access to via the SpamWall Control Panel.

What happens to email identified as Spam? [Top]

When a potential Spam/UCE message is detected by the system depending on the "Spam Scoring Levels" set in the Spamfilter Config screen of the SpamWall control panel the message is either "tagged" with the [SPAM?] tag and forwarded on to the recipient, or blocked from delivery to end users. Emails that are blocked by the system are delivered to the Spam Quarantine, which you will have access to via the SpamWall Control Panel.

You will be able to log into the Control Panel interface of your SpamWall system and view all of the email messages that the system has "quarantined" as Spam/UCE. If necessary you will be able to retrieve any legitimate email message that may have been inadvertently directed to the quarantine and release and deliver it on to the intended recipient and also at the same time automatically whitelist the sender email address if desired.

What happens to Virus infected emails? [Top]

Email messages that have been identified as being infected with a virus, worm or other potentially dangerous attachment are blocked by the system and delivered to the Quarantine on your SpamWall system which you will have access to via the SpamWall Control Panel.

You will be able to log into the control panel interface on your SpamWall system and view all of the email messages that the system has quarantined. If necessary you will be able to retrieve any legitimate email message that may have been inadvertently directed to the quarantine and release and deliver it on to the intended recipient.

What happens to Quarantined email? [Top]

Email messages which have been detected by the SpamWall system as either being Spam/UCE or Virus infected are delivered to the Spam Quarantine on your SpamWall system.

You will be able to log into the control panel interface of your SpamWall system and view all of the email messages that the system has quarantined as either Spam or Virus infected.

If necessary you will be able to retrieve any legitimate email message that may have been inadvertently directed to the quarantine and forward it on to the appropriate recipient. The main SpamWall administrator as well as domain owners and individual email users can be set up with their own control panel login account so that they can view and menage their quarantined email and other related settings.

How often is the SpamWall system updated with new Spam rules and Virus definitions? [Top]

The SpamWall Spam Firewall system automatically receives multiple updates of Spam rules and Virus definitions up to several times per hour providing up to the minute defense against the latest Spam campaigns and types and emerging Virus and Worm threats ensuring effective and accurate Spam/UCE detection and Virus protection.

Unlike with other anti-spam and anti-virus solutions there are no monthly or yearly license or other fees involved for operating system updates or updates to Spam rules and Virus definitions.

Which mail servers and mail server software are supported? [Top]

As all Internet mail servers and software utilize the same SMTP protocol to send and receive email messages all mail servers and mail server software would be compatible with the SpamWall Spam Firewall system.

Will the SpamWall be compatible with my network setup? [Top]

The SpamWall will work with all common network configurations. If you have any concerns about the SpamWall system being compatible with a specific network setup or configuration you can contact SpamWall technical support at service@spamwall.com for advice or assistance or complete and submit our Online Contact Form.

Is assistance available with migrating my Spam filtering service from another provider? [Top]

The SpamWall technical support team are experts in the migration from practically all other types of Anti-Spam systems and services. Whether it involves an Anti-Spam hardware appliance setup like the Barracuda, a software solution supported on your own servers, or a hosted solution at another provider our technical support can advise you on the best process for carrying out your migration and provide advice and even direct assistance as necessary to ensure that the migration takes place smoothly, rapidly and most importantly without service interruption.

Our expert server migration service is included free of charge to help you migrate from any other Spam filtering services provider, Anti-Spam software application or hardware appliance setup.

Is there anything to install? [Top]

No, there is nothing to install and no configuration changes to your mail server or existing email setup are necessary. All that is needed to start using your SpamWall system is a simple DNS MX record change to direct email for your domain(s) to your SpamWall system for processing.

We already have an email server, why do we need a Spam Firewall? [Top]

Internet email servers do not usually have comprehensive Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus blocking and scanning capabilities. such as Connection Control and Validation, IP/Domain RBL Blocking, Blacklisting and Whitelisting capabilities as wall as the ability to view, configure and control such things as system mail logs, mail queue management, Spam scoring levels and Spam and Virus quarantine capabilities.

These would be just a few of the features and services available on the SpamWall Spam Firewall. It may be possible to install, configure and maintain some of these features on an existing email server however it would be a complex and lengthy task to source and install and/or custom program and develop all of the necessary software applications and other services in order to provide similar features and capabilities of the SpamWall on your own mail server.

We already have a firewall, why do we need a SpamWall? [Top]

A firewall is designed to protect your network from external attacks and to control and/or limit the type of connections and traffic which are able to communicate with and/or access your network and servers, not to block or filter out Spam, Viruses and other unwanted and potentially dangerous email traffic.

The SpamWall is positioned "in front" of your existing firewall and email server(s) and is able to immediately start working to block and filter up to 98% or more of all Spam and Virus laden emails using it's default "out of the box" settings alone.

The SpamWall system provides an integrated Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus solution offering complete email protection at the "network perimeter" level, before unwanted or potentially dangerous and costly email reaches your network or mail server.

Does the SpamWall work with Microsoft Exchange? [Top]

The SpamWall Spam Firewall is 100% compatible with any mail server software that is already able to accept Internet email so all mail servers and mail server software are compatible with the SpamWall system. This would include Microsoft Exchange, Novell Groupwise, Lotus Domino, Sendmail, Qmail, Exim, Postfix, Atmail, Zimbra etc.

Is there any delay in email delivery? [Top]

There should be no noticeable delay in the delivery of processed by your SpamWall system as the process of scanning and filtering happens real-time and takes only milliseconds. However, sometimes when large attachments are involved there may be a delay of a few seconds due to the necessary Virus scanning which is carried out on such attachments.

In general, as speed is not as critically important in the delivery of email as it is with web serving for example the extra couple of seconds which it might take for a message to be processed and delivered by the SpamWall system is negligible when compared to the amount of time and resources saved by having basically Spam and Virus free email arriving at the the destination mail server.

Do you charge any per user or per domain fees? [Top]

No, there are no per-domain, per-user, or per-mailbox fees or other usage or license fees to pay. Also, unlike with other anti-spam and anti-virus solutions there are no monthly or yearly license or other similar fees involved for operating system updates or updates to Spam rules and Virus definitions.

Are there any monthly or yearly license fees for system updates or Spam and Virus rules and definitions? [Top]

No, unlike with other anti-spam and anti-virus solutions there are no monthly or yearly license or other fees involved for operating system updates or updates to Spam rules and Virus definitions. Also, there are no per-domain, per-user, or per-mailbox fees or other usage or license fees to pay.

Are there limits to the number of domains, email or user accounts which can be supported by the SpamWall? [Top]

In general there are no fixed or "hard" limits on the number of domains or email accounts which can be supported by a particular model of the SpamWall Spam Firewall. However there is a recommended load capacity that is based on the average number of emails processed on a daily basis.

The domain and daily email message capacity numbers quoted for a particular SpamWall system model would be general recommendations based on the performance of a given model of SpamWall system. The actual amount of email that can be processed in any given time frame would generally depend primarily on the type and content of your email traffic. If your SpamWall system is processing more emails than the total daily recommended processing capacity for your particular SpamWall system model and you start to notice a delay in email delivery of more than a couple of seconds or if operations such as quarantine access or mail log searches are noticeably slow then it may be time to upgrade your SpamWall system to a higher capacity model.

Is there a daily limit on the number email messages a particular SpamWall system model is able to process? [Top]

There is no fixed or "hard" limit placed on the volume of email which a particular model of the SpamWall Spam Firewall can process in any given day, week or month etc. The numbers quoted are general recommendations based on the performance of a given model of SpamWall system.

Approximately what daily volume of email can be processed by the various SpamWall system models? [Top]

The general recommended average email processing volumes for the SpamWall systems are as follows:

SpamWall Lite: Up to 100,000 Messages Per Day
SpamWall Corporate/SME: Up to 1 Million Messages Per Day
SpamWall ISP/Webhost: Up to 10 Million Messages Per Day
SpamWall Enterprise: Up to 30 Million Messages Per Day

There are no fixed or "hard limit" on the number of domains or email accounts or the volume of email which a particular model of the SpamWall Spam Firewall can process. The numbers quoted are general recommendations based on the performance of a given model of SpamWall system. The actual amount of email which will be able to be processed in any given time frame would depend primarily on the type and content of your email traffic.

Is there an additional charge for Virus Scanning and Filtering capabilities? [Top]

There are no additional charges for Virus Scanning and Filtering capabilities and no extra charges for anti-virus software licensing fees etc.

Why is the SpamWall a better solution than installing Anti-Spam/Virus software on our existing mail server? [Top]

The SpamWall Spam Firewall is a dedicated solution that delivers a number of advantages over installing, configuring and maintaining anti-spam and anti-virus software on your own mail server.

The SpamWall system is a complete "out of the box" solution that is very easy to implement. There is no hardware to purchase, no server to build, no software to install and configure, no compatibility issues, no on-going maintenance issues, and no steep "learning curve" involved.

Unlike other anti-spam solutions, the SpamWall Spam Firewall offering complete email and mail server protection at the "network perimeter" level reducing the load placed on your existing email server and network by off-loading the task of both Spam and Virus processing and filtering, effectively reducing the volume of Spam, Viruses and other unwanted email reaching your email server by up to 98% or more.

You can be up and running within a few hours and seeing an immediate reduction of up to a 98% or more of Spam, Viruses and other unwanted email being delivered to your email servers and email account users, as well as realizing savings on bandwidth, administrative and support costs.

How will I have access to configuration options on my SpamWall system? [Top]

Administration of the SpamWall system is carried out via an easy to use web interface control panel that provides access to Administration and System Setup Parameters, System Status, System Mail Logs and Mail Queue, User Management, Spamfilter Configuration and Scoring Levels, IP/Domain/Email Blacklists and Whitelists, RBL Blacklist Settings, Spam and Virus Quarantine controls and more.

Will the SpamWall work with any web hosting or email service provider? [Top]

Yes, no matter what web hosting or email services provider or mail server software you use or where your email server is located the SpamWall can provide processing and filtering for your domains and email users.

Domains from any TLD hierarchy (.com, .net, .org, .co.uk, .com.au, .de, .nl, .es etc) are supported and the SpamWall can route processed email to any mail server located on any network in any geographic location in the world

If you have multiple email servers you can specify a different destination email server for each domain if required and the SpamWall system can deliver email to any mail server on any network anywhere on the Internet.

Will there be any need for configuration changes to my SMTP / POP server or email client software settings? [Top]

There should be no need for any configuration or other changes to any existing SMTP or POP server setup or to the configuration of any email client software. All of your existing email related systems and infrastructure should work without any configuration changes or modifications.

Can the SpamWall be used to filter outgoing email? [Top]

The SpamWall Spam Firewall is an "inbound" email security solution designed specifically to deal the problem of inbound Spam and other unwanted email however SpamWall also has an outbound email filtering and relay solution called SafeRoute which works in a similar manner to the SpamWall providing a secure hosted email gateway that includes a complete Spam and Virus filtering solution which ensures all email leaving your local mail server and network is Spam and Virus free, providing effective protection against blacklisting and other potential email delivery issues.

What levels of redundancy do the SpamWall systems have? [Top]

The SpamWall systems are hosted in our Class A Data Center in New York City which has multiple redundant fibre channel connections to the Internet.

All SpamWall configurations including domain and user account settings, logs and databases are backed up on a daily basis. All SpamWall systems are automatically monitored for connectivity and active services on a continual basis. Server and network monitoring software notifies our technical support people via SMS if a problem is detected or if a request for urgent assistance from a customer is received . Response time to genuinely urgent issues is usually within 5-10 minutes on a 24/7/365 basis.

Using the SpamWall Spam Firewall system will also provide a high level of redundancy for your own email related infrastructure because in the event your mail server should offline or stop accepting messages for some reason your SpamWall system will queue or "spool" all inbound email messages. Your SpamWall system will queue and continually attempt to deliver the messages every few minutes for up to 5 days. When a destination email server is back online and accepting email all queued email messages should be delivered within a few minutes. If for some reason your mail server is going to be offline for longer than 5 days on all systems with the exception of the base SpamWall Lite edition you can increase the spooling or "Mail Queue Lifetime" period to as much as 15 days in the Advanced Settings screen of the SpamWall control panel. If you have a SpamWall Lite edition system and you need to have the mail queue holding period extended for some reason or if you need a holding period of more than 15 days enabled on your system you can contact support.

What happens if my SpamWall system goes down? [Top]

All of the SpamWall systems are automatically monitored for connectivity and active services on a continual basis. Server and network monitoring software notifies our technical support people via SMS if a problem is detected or if a request for urgent assistance from a customer is received and response time is usually within 5-10 minutes on a 24/7/365 basis. Multiple "hot swap" SpamWall units are on standby at all times in the event that an urgent system replacement is required. Should any SpamWall system stop responding for any reason our technicians are notified immediately and will take appropriate action to resolve the problem, typically in less than 30 minutes.

How secure is email processed by the SpamWall system? [Top]

Using the SpamWall to process your email for Spam and Viruses does not affect the security of your email in any way. The SpamWall system does not back up or make copies of your email and the only email messages that are stored on the system are those which have been detected as being Spam or Virus infected.

Your SpamWall system does log some basic information relating to the email messages processed by the system, such as the "from" and to" information, as would any mail server in it's mail log file. This information is accessible only to you as the administrator of your SpamWall system via the Mail Log Viewer system incorporated into the SpamWall system control panel.

Unlike other Spam Filtering Services your SpamWall system is a dedicated unit and only you will have administrative access to your SpamWall. It is not possible for any other unauthorized third party to access access information associated with the email processed by your SpamWall system.

SpamWall takes data security very seriously. Our privacy policy ensures that no customer data can be accessed by any third party without the customer's explicit permission. Our data security policies and procedures are also among the most stringent and comprehensive in the industry. For more information see the SpamWall Data Security Policy.
